This probably is one of the most stressful trips I have ever been, but it did teach me a few lessons in life that I am about to share with you. The trip was an escape plan to the cold Toronto weather before Christmas. I booked our flight a few days before the trip for a 5 days getaway to the Sun. I have been in other places in Mexico but Riviera Maya has always had a special place in my heart. From its countless cenote’s to its Mayan History and Culture to the beautiful streets of Valladolid and amazing beach vibes in Tulum on top of many more reasons to come back that’s why we did!
We left Toronto in the Afternoon thru Airtransat. I have been seeing them working with other bloggers that’s why I booked thru them. Upon arrival at Cancun Airport, we have been waiting for almost 5 hours for our luggage to appear on the luggage claim area, none of their employees helped us until I actually looked for one, upon seeing one I asked him to check our 2 pieces of luggage. Upon his returned, he told us that our luggage is missing so we had to file a report and they’ll inform us the next day. The stress at this point was really high already as all our things and everything else is in our luggage. I have never lost a luggage and this was the first time. My Husband doesn’t even have his pair of contact lens, I had no slippers as well. We only had what we came in with (winter clothes) from this point I was already upset because, to be honest, it was really a stressful moment not knowing when your stuff is arriving. Our vacation is already starting out as a nightmare. Then when we got to Azul Fives, we have been shuffled around 3 rooms given issues that I won’t discuss here, if you followed my Instagram story you’ll know what I’m talking about. ;p We chose Azul Fives because they have the best food ever – I love the Tequila Bar and Koh Tai. To make the story shorter, we end up buying clothes from Forever 21 and H&M in Playa Del Carmen town and received our luggage on our 3rd day, at this point we only have 2 more days to enjoy the Riviera Maya, So we didn’t let this affect us. ( Airtransat UPDATE: They are also refunding me $400 for the clothes I have bought and given us $250 discount on our next trip)
As soon as we got our luggage back, we rented a car for 2 days and drove around Riviera Maya. I highly suggest this to everyone travelling to Mexico. Also always make sure to go for the international brand you know you could trust. Our first stop was Dos Ojos, From there we made our way to Tulum where we spent pretty much the whole day. I love the vibe and the beach in Tulum, I honestly think Tulum is one of the best beaches in Mexico. We had lunch and Dinner here, which I’m sharing on my next post. The next day, we drove all the way to Chichen Itza to see the Mayan pyramid and Cenote Ik-kil. We tried driving to Las Colaradas after but unfortunately, google map brought us to another place, We didn’t have an extra day anymore so we just went back to the hotel and enjoyed our last dinner at the hotel.
All in all, it was a great trip! It got me out of my comfort zone that I even made friends along the way, I learned to just laugh and don’t stress about little things that happen to you. I also learned patience and definitely tested my relationship. I also learned how to value time and be more productive. I appreciated the small things and most important of all you can’t control everything so might as well enjoy the ride because life is too short to be negative towards a situation like this. I had the best time exploring Riviera Maya more than I did before.
Here are some of the places we went to:
PLAYA DEL CARMEN TOWN – Where you can shop major brands, get cheaper tours than what the hotels are offering, it’s also very well known for its nightlife which I haven’t tried yet. But I was told they throw nice fun parties by the beach area.
Some of the snippets of my stay at Azul Fives – they have a gorgeous sunset and delicious Gourmet all Inclusive food. I highly suggest going to the Tequila Bar where they have premium tequilas plus the bartender will give you a few lessons about tequila. For food, my favourite is Koh Tai and must try the coconut chicken soup or you can ask a vegetarian version which I did, and don’t be shy to ask for seconds. Everything on their menu is delicious. I also love Arezzo – The Italian restaurant, they have a few vegetarian options, my favourite to order are Mushroom Risotto and 3 kinds of pasta that has the colour of the Italian flag.
DOS OJOS – I highly suggest visiting the 1st eye as it has clearer water compared to the second one and so stunning to dive in.
MAYAN RUINS, TULUM – Make sure to bring along a swimsuit with you for a quick dip by the beach, a must do after doing the trek around the ruins. You’ll also spot alot of iguana’s here.
COCO TULUM – For food, music, and the beach.
The pure white sand beach along Tulum Bay.
MATCHA MAMA – Dreamy matcha lattes and ice creams in Tulum.
AZULIK – Such a stunning place to stay and eat for dinner! I am aiming to book the Sky Villa on my next trip as it was fully booked during the time of my visit.
CHICHEN ITZA – A must see if you’re visiting Riviera Maya, don’t forget to clap by the bottom of the stairs.
CENOTE IK-IKIL – since you’re already in Chichen Itza cenote Ik-ikil is definitely a must see, It’s so beautiful from above, but unfortunately, I didn’t like it when we reached the bottom to swim. The water is darker and I’m afraid to go in not knowing whats lurking beneath hahaha regardless it’s a beautiful cenote to see.
Get lost in MERIDA, YUCATAN – Definitely a must see on the way to Las Colaradas. Such a cute beautiful town away from the tourist area, where you actually get to see real Authentic Mexican experience.
So this all I have for now but I am aiming to go back after my Asia trip so I could do a full YUCATAN guide for you. for now, I’ll be dreaming of endless Avocados and Margarita. 🙂 what are you dreaming of?
